1. Niederdeutsche Übernamen zu mnd. rave(n) »Rabe«; vgl. Rabe (1.), (2.).
2. Aus einer niederdeutschen Kurzform von Rufnamen, die mit dem Namenwort hraban gebildet sind (z.B.Hrabanwalt, Rabenalt), entstandene Familiennamen.
3. Bei dem Familiennamen Raven kann es sich gelegentlich um einen Herkunftsnamen zu dem gleich lautenden Ortsnamen in Niedersachsen handeln. Frederick Raven ist a. 1418 in Coesfeld bezeugt.
