1. Aus einer Kurzform des alten Rufnamens Gumprecht (Gumbert) gebildeter Familienname.
2. Im westoberdeutschen Bereich auch Wohnstättenname zu mhd. gumpe »Wasserwirbel«, später westoberdeutsch »Brunnen, Wasserloch« für jemanden, der an einer solchen Örtlichkeit wohnte.
